Last fall, Summit en Español honored one of its most influential and godly leaders, Lloyd Mann, as he retired from service as an elder. Lloyd and his wife Wilma helped establish the campus after retiring from their role as regional consultants for Missions Mobilization in Central America and the Caribbean.
After college, Lloyd was part of the International Mission Board’s inaugural Journeyman program, a two-year, overseas missions experience. He learned Spanish in high school and college and always had a desire to share the gospel in Latin America. As a Journeyman, he served in Costa Rica, where he met Wilma. They married and became career missionaries in the Dominican Republic and Mexico, working with university students with the goal of raising up young people from that region to become missionaries themselves.
At the Summit, Lloyd assisted SEE’s pastor, Raudel Hernandez, for many years while also serving as an elder and a small group leader. Over the years, Lloyd’s main focus has been on discipleship, and he has seen people’s lives revolutionized through the power of the gospel.
“I’ve seen couples who have lived together for years and have children together get baptized and then immediately get married because they want to follow God’s will for their life,” Lloyd said.
He has also seen God bring back together people whose marriages were in shambles. He’s witnessed young people who were struggling with moral issues or sexual sin find victory in Christ and then go on to become leaders in the church. His greatest joy has been to see people grow as Christians and then begin to disciple others.
One of Lloyd’s most significant contributions has been to help Summit leadership understand Latin culture as they face the challenge of being able to take into account other cultures and preferences when it comes to worship and preaching styles and other aspects of life. He is very excited about the direction Summit is taking, especially with the new group of Latin believers who now worship in North Raleigh on Sunday afternoons.
“God has brought the nations to us, and we need to show them God’s hope and assurance,” Lloyd shared. “For too long, the church has been silent when it comes to the issue of the immigrant, and we have done too little, too late. Although individuals have widely disparate convictions on this topic, the church needs to clarify how to express Christian love to our immigrant neighbors.”
One way we can gain a better understanding of our neighbors is to get involved in an ESL (English as a Second Language) program. Another opportunity would be to worship with SEE occasionally and develop relationships with its members. Many of SEE’s members speak English and would love to have a friendship with members from other Summit campuses. While there is potential for cultural misunderstandings, Lloyd fervently believes that the Summit’s members would greatly benefit from developing cross-cultural friendships.
“In heaven, all races will be included, not just black and white, but also Hispanic, Asian, Indian, African, and every other ethnicity,” Lloyd said. “We cannot afford to ignore the foreigner in our midst, nor should we see them as the enemy, because God made and loves us all. Our church should reflect the way heaven will look.”

Lloyd Mann: Sirviéndoles a las naciones entre nosotros
En septiembre del año pasado, Summit en Español reconoció a uno de sus líderes espirituales que más influencia ha tenido, Lloyd Mann, al retirarse de su papel como anciano de la congregación. Lloyd y su esposa, Wilma, ayudaron a establecer el plantel de Summit en Español después de pensionarse de su papel como Consultores Regionales para la Movilización Misionera en Centroamérica y el Caribe.
Después de la universidad, Lloyd formó parte del primer grupo de misioneros “Journeymen” de la International Mission Board, un programa de servicio misionero de dos años. Lloyd aprendió el español en high school y en la universidad y desde temprana edad tuvo un interés en llevar el evangelio en América Latina. Como Journeyman, sirvió en Costa Rica, donde conoció a Wilma. Se casaron y fueron como misioneros de largo plazo a la República Dominicana, México y Costa Rica, trabajando con estudiantes universitarios con el propósito de levantar a jóvenes de la región para llevar el evangelio a las naciones.
En la Iglesia Summit, Lloyd sirvió como ayudante al pastor Raudel Hernández durante muchos años y como anciano y líder de grupos de estudio bíblico. El enfoque de su vida ha sido el discipulado, y ha visto a muchas personas transformadas por el poder del evangelio.
“He visto a parejas que han vivido juntos por años y que ya tenían hijos entregarse a Cristo y ser bautizados e inmediatamente casarse porque querían obedecer la voluntad de Dios para sus vidas,” dijo Lloyd.
Lloyd también ha visto a Dios restaurar matrimonios que estaban a punto de disolverse. Ha visto a jóvenes que estaban luchando con problemas morales, o con pecado sexual, encontrar victoria en Cristo, crecer y llegar a ser líderes en la congregación. Su gozo más grande ha sido ver a personas crecer espiritualmente y luego empezar a discipular a otros.
Una de las contribuciones más significantes de Lloyd ha sido ayudar al liderazgo de Summit a entender la cultura latina y a tomar en cuenta otras culturas y sus preferencias cuando se trata de estilos de adoración y predicación y otros aspectos de la vida. Está muy emocionado con la dirección que la Iglesia Summit está tomando al abrir otro ministerio para latinos en el norte de Raleigh los domingos por la tarde.
“Dios nos ha traído a las naciones aquí a nosotros, y necesitamos mostrarles el amor de Dios y la esperanza que hay en Cristo,” dijo Lloyd. “Durante demasiado tiempo la iglesia ha guardado silencio cuando se trata del tema de la inmigración, y lo poco que hemos hecho ha sido demasiado tarde. Aunque hay diferencias de opinión sobre el tema, la iglesia necesita aclarar cómo expresarles el amor cristiano a nuestros vecinos inmigrantes.”
Una forma en que podríamos entender mejor a nuestros vecinos latinos sería involucrarnos en un programa de ESL (inglés como segundo idioma). Otra oportunidad sería unirnos de vez en cuando con ellos en sus servicios de adoración para desarrollar amistades con sus miembros. Muchos de los miembros de SEE hablan inglés y les encantaría tener amistades entre los miembros de otros planteles. Aunque a veces haya cosas de su cultura que no entendamos, Lloyd cree firmemente que los miembros de Summit se beneficiarían mucho de este proceso de cultivar amistades con personas de otras culturas.
“En el Cielo, va a haber gente de todas las razas, no sólo blancos y negros, sino hispanos, asiáticos, indios, africanos y gente de todas las etnias,” dijo Lloyd. No podemos darnos el lujo de ignorar al extranjero en nuestro medio, mucho menos de considerarlo como nuestro enemigo, porque Dios nos creó a todos y nos ama a todos. Nuestra iglesia debe reflejar la mezcla racial que habrá en el Cielo.”
